Ron Adams and Heath Franco

Last week two Sydney based artists visited Toowoomba for the opening of their show This Time at the University of Southern Queensland. The exhibition was curated by one of RAYGUN’s board members Kyle Jenkins and consisted of Ron’s paintings which filled almost every wall of the gallery and two of Heaths videos which were installed at either end of the space on TV  monitors.  The night was topped off with magic DJ David Usher (although it had to be turned down at times so we could hear the video) and his amazing seventies revival mix with plenty of red wine to warm our southern visitors. While I was able to get photographs of Ron’s works, I will have to direct you to a link for Heaths. Check him out. http://www.rococoproductions.com/500/500_041.html

Liam Gillick

One of my favourite things about this interview is when Gillick touches on what you do if you don’t have any ideas but still want to be an artist. Gillick went to Europe and met other people who didn’t have work or ideas but didn’t want to leave the culture to other people… check out the interview. I loved it. -A

SARAH MARTIN ‘Stories of Desire’ OPENING!!

Last night was a great success! Thanks to everyone who came and supported  by attending and also purchasing work. It was a great night! with David and Mace on the Vinyl, (which even prompted some dancing) Check out the photographs HERE, more images of the work can be seen HERE. If you missed the opening RAYGUN will be open this Sunday from 12-2pm.

STORIES OF DESIRE

Sarah Martin’s series ‘Stories of Desire’ portrays a longing or desire through various imagery and stories, with much of the longing depicted in the work identifiable within our own lives. The work recognizes a longing for connection, for family in another place, a longing to keep friends closer, to be attractive, and even understood.  Martin has directed her attention to making art in response to social interactions and an identification of this sense of longing or desire with the people with whom she comes into contact with in her daily life. ‘Stories of Desire’ is a culmination of photographs and videos of Martins students, new friends and their families, as well as perfect strangers who, Martin explains, like her, are ‘struggling to build a home and community in an era marked by economic crisis and global instability. Martin states, we, who have left our family of origins and have yet to create traditional nuclear families of our own, occupy a social space that is liminal. We stand poised at a delicate and precarious threshold that opens out onto an unknown future’. Through her videos and photographs Martin depicts this sense of longing and desire that exists within the lives of those depicted, creating a space to enter visually for an understanding of our own, and others sense longing and desire, forming connections between our own wants and desires and those depicted.

RAYGUN MAGAZINE 1992-2000

Raygun was an alternative rock-and-roll magazine exploring experimental music and typography design. It was chaotic and not always readable but had striking covers and imagery. They were known for the cutting edge advertising  and covered musicians  such as Radiohead, Bjork, Beck, Flaming Lips, and PJ Harvey.

Emma Gasson

Raygun are interested in the culture of the everyday and encouraging people to think differently, even for a few moments, about the space they occupy. I came across UK artist Emma Gasson whose work is really simple and beautifully effective whilst addressing these themes. Check her out. http://emmagasson.com/work_tonbridge_road.html
