PASCAL DOMBIS AND THE SUBLIME EXPERIENCE

Tonight is Pascal’s exhibition opening and also day three of having him with us in Toowoomba from Paris. We have been showing him around our town, he has done a talk about his work for students from the University and we have even had the Australian BBQ with friends. We thought that would be in keeping with the title of his show Mixed Grill(e).

Last night at dinner we decided to do something sublime today, apart from his show, and while we have managed to lunch on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, we thought we would share a theme song. Here it is, and a taste of tonights sounds. HAPPY FRIDAY xx

CAI GUO-QIANG at GOMA

Falling Back To Earth is an exhibition on show now at the Gallery of Modern Art Brisbane.

The show really has to be visited to be experienced so I hope the images can suggest the intentions of Cai’s first solo show at GOMA. The work is about humanity’s relationship with nature which is inspired by the unique landscapes of Queensland and Chinese Literati painting and poetry. The works in the exhibition reflect on the idea of coming full circle – of working through competing aspects of human nature, as well as the obstacles we face in our relationships with our environment and each other, now and into the future. To be a spectator of these installations allows for a space to reflect and contemplate our humanity and existence within the simple cycle of life. The wolves for Cai are monumental in that they are so completely loyal and never give up. Here they are seen to be leaping into a glass wall (99 of them, his favourite number) which is a metaphor for the Berlin wall and the idea of persistence and determination to continue in the face of adversity. Enjoy.

Proximity Festival

This is great!! love it!!

http://proximityfestival.com/

this following is taken from the above website:

Proximity Festival is the first one-on-one intimate performance platform of its kind in Australia. It’s been built from the ground up by Perth artists with one person in mind – YOU.

An artist run initiative led by James Berlyn and Sarah Rowbottam with Kelli Mccluskey, Proximity Festival provides critical peer support, encouraging artists from all disciplines to experiment with new modes of practice in the creation of participatory art.

“Entering each new performance space in Proximity is like entering a portal into someone elseʼs life.” **** ARTSHUB

We want to provide independent artists with a chance to take creative risks, push their practice and make small-scale work that can be packed in a suitcase and presented again, and again. We want to provide you, our audience, with transformative experiences that place you at the core of the work, activating you to rethink what performance can be. Each year Proximity Festival takes over a venue in its entirety, and invites artists from all disciplines to re-purpose galleries and seek out alternative uses of hidden, forgotten or negative spaces. Twelve artists are curated into the program and participate in a two-week mentored development LAB prior to the performance season.

PASCAL DOMBIS (PARIS) at RAYGUN

Pascal will be joining us in Toowoomba from France for the opening!

For more than 20 years, Pascal Dombis has been using computers and algorithms to produce excessive repetition of simple processes. He exploits the paradoxical coexistence of orderly control and chaotic aleatory forces to produce unpredictable, unstable and dynamic visual forms which he synthesizes into digital wall drawings, lenticular pieces or video installations. Through an abuse of technological processes, Pascal Dombis tries to confront the human viewer with ‘his/her’ own primitive irrationality.

Hudson, Dealer, mentor and Curator has died.

Tarn sent me this link yesterday, Hudson does sound like he was a beautiful curator, the way he ran his gallery had a sense of integrity.

…“For him it was important to have a relationship with the artist, that the artist felt they had a home, that they didn’t feel that they needed to make what the gallery said they need to make, that they could show what they wanted to show,” said Mr. Dams. “The gallery was not market driven.”
