Today we met with our new friend Michael Pleming. We sat for 3 hours drinking tea and having breakfast while he shared photos and stories of his life. The most amazing project thank you Harrell and stay tuned as the story/project unfolds……
the most amazing Harrell Fletcher
In case you’re not sure about our upcoming artist here is a bit more information to get you excited about the show:
Harrell Fletcher is an American Social Practitioner, who engages people in the community in his exhibitions who do not necessarily have a connection with contemporary art. Fletcher has created a structure allowing an individual who works in a burger store around the corner from RAYGUN, to determine the structure and programming of his exhibition. Michael Plemings interests, and personality will therefore be brought to light through this exhibition.
Fletcher has shown widely including recently at the Tate Modern (performance room) and the Whitney (New York), he lives and works in Portland (Oregon) where he teaches social practice at Portland State University.
Harrell is on the left and Adam moser who showed at RAYGUN last year is on the right.
HARRELL FLETCHER (USA)
HARRELL FLETCHER – MICHAEL PLEMING
HARRELL FLETCHER IS OUR NEXT ARTIST AT RAYGUN!
Opening February 1, 2013
RAYGUN has received the following instructions from Harrell:
‘Create the entire exhibition with and about someone you meet in the area around the gallery who has nothing to do with contemporary art, someone that you don’t know already, but someone that you find interesting and would like to spend some time getting to know. Along with the show also program in some events related to the person and the person’s interests. The show title can be the persons name.’
After much deliberation and with much excitement we’ve found our man – Michael Pleming
OTHER EXERCISES by Kurt Johannessen
While I was in NYC I spent some time looking around at the artists books in Printed Matter.
I fell in love with this little book Other Exercises by Kurt Johannessen, filled with amazing words of wisdom and just sitting on the counter, so I decided to buy it for myself. I am so glad I did, but the silly thing is I love it so much I wouldn’t dare part with it but want to share it all at the same time.
It’s just dawned on me that I’m lucky enough to be the other half of raygunlab where I can post up stuff that is of interest and also relevant to RAYGUN as an art space. This is my New Years gift to you for 2013 – some regular little posts from my new little book, like kind of love notes to you, to get you through the year. Tarn x
Draw hundreds of tiny arrows pointing in all directions under your feet. Go to a beach where there is no wind. Look out on the ocean.
Vitamin Green and Fritz Haeg
On the wish list is this book Vitamin Green which deals with topics such as sustainable design through architecture, landscape architecture and product designs. We love the addition of American artist Fritz Haeg who turns wasted land in peoples front yards into sustainable vegetable gardens. Check him out.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS from the GUNNERS
It’s been a super awesome time having fabulous shows and being immersed in interesting dialogue with artists from far and wide. Thank you for your support throughout 2012 and we hope 2013 is all you want it to be. Here’s to an awesome exhibition schedule for the upcoming year with some nice surprises in store. Lots of love and magic Ali and Tarn (The Gunners). XX
RAYGUN in NYC
Last week I (Tarn) was in New York for some businessing as well as pleasuring. While I was checking out the galleries and High Line around the Meatpacking District and Chelsea I stopped by Printed Matter. A shop that has long been on the to do list and full of artists books by artists about anything imaginable. While there I decided I should leave a bit of RAYGUN/Australia behind, so asked the girl at the counter if they’d mind if I left some cards. I wish I had my packet of Lee Walton Experiential cards with me to leave but they were back at the Hotel. Til next time. If you’re in the hood check them out.
Bombing the Lotus
Tonight ‘Bombing the Lotus’ opened, with our biggest turn out, I think, ever! we celebrated wonderful work by Stephen Spurrier and David Usher and celebrated Stephen’s Birthday. Thank you to all who came. The only think missing was Tarn, who’s walking the streets of New York, it wasn’t the same without her.
Tonight really was a great end to 2012. It’s been such a great year, it was such a party atmosphere. Loved it. As always.
Here’s the artist talk.
‘Some pigeons are more equal than others’
The project was conceived for the 2012 Venice Biennale. A project by Swiss artist Julian Charrière, and German photographer Julius von Bismark. They installed their “pigeon apparatus” in Copenhagen for a week. The pigeons flew in and were covered with organic pigment and then flew out again roaming the streets of Venice as normal. The city was filled with coloured pigeons until the colour eventually wore off. More information is available on Charriere’s website
