Internationally renowned three-dimensional artist Tilman has achieved his objective of “stimulating” viewers of his exhibition at RAYGUN gallery in Toowoomba.

“I believe most people have a pre-conceived idea of what art exhibitions are,” says Tilman, who abandoned traditional painting practice to move into three-dimensional constructions in the late 1990s.

“When they go to a gallery they expect to see painting, sculptures and the like but I try to encourage people to become participants in my exhibitions.

“I want them to participate and I do this by using a structural approach and by encouraging them to use their imaginations about what they are seeing.

“My artistic practice is deeply rooted in the here and now and to do this I draw on the constituents of every day life and the environment.”

The Munich-born Tilman’s RAYGUN showing, which opened on April 1, is titled “The image is in your mind” and is sub-titled “I love the way you smile.”

His work is a wooden structure put together in the style of a maze.

The aim is to encourage people to negotiate their way through, but this must be done with care.

Additionally Tilman has included a square white painting in the exhibition and, with his acute sense of humor, urges viewers to make of it “whatever they will.”

Although Tilman will be returning to his studio in Italy the exhibition at RAYGUN will continue through to the end of April.

Interested parties will find a visit to the gallery well worthwhile.
