DOLCEACQUA ARTE CONTEMPORARY

Our time with Tilman and his project at RAYGUN has come to a close but we love that the dialogue surrounding his practice has only just begun. It was super interesting hearing all that he and Petra Bungert have achieved through running their artist run space CCNOA over the years from 1998 – 2010. What’s even more exciting and interesting is knowing that their nurturing commitment to artists whose practices surround various modes of non objective, reductive and concrete painting continues through a project and exhibition space d.a.c at Tilman’s home (one of his two bunkers) in Northern Italy. Check it out.

TILMAN – THE IMAGE IS IN YOUR MIND (I LOVE THE WAY YOU SMILE)

It has been our pleasure at RAYGUN to host Tilman in Toowoomba for the past 10 days. Tilman’s exhibition The Image Is In Your Mind (I Love The Way You Smile) opened on Friday Night.  During Tilman’s time in Toowoomba he also installed a wall painting with Tarn McLean and Kyle Jenkins who run ‘REFLEX PROJECTS’. Tilman also has an exhibition coming up at at the University of Southern Queensland in the ‘Red Door Gallery’. Thanks to Georgia Mactaggart, RAYGUN’s number 1 intern for her assistance towards installing this show and for compiling the awesome videos below.

Tilman

Internationally renowned three-dimensional artist Tilman has achieved his objective of “stimulating” viewers of his exhibition at RAYGUN gallery in Toowoomba.

“I believe most people have a pre-conceived idea of what art exhibitions are,” says Tilman, who abandoned traditional painting practice to move into three-dimensional constructions in the late 1990s.

“When they go to a gallery they expect to see painting, sculptures and the like but I try to encourage people to become participants in my exhibitions.

“I want them to participate and I do this by using a structural approach and by encouraging them to use their imaginations about what they are seeing.

“My artistic practice is deeply rooted in the here and now and to do this I draw on the constituents of every day life and the environment.”

The Munich-born Tilman’s RAYGUN showing, which opened on April 1, is titled “The image is in your mind” and is sub-titled “I love the way you smile.”

His work is a wooden structure put together in the style of a maze.

The aim is to encourage people to negotiate their way through, but this must be done with care.

Additionally Tilman has included a square white painting in the exhibition and, with his acute sense of humor, urges viewers to make of it “whatever they will.”

Although Tilman will be returning to his studio in Italy the exhibition at RAYGUN will continue through to the end of April.

Interested parties will find a visit to the gallery well worthwhile.

Its beautiful, and it needed to happen.

Made by our intern, Georgia Mactaggart.

Many more exciting things to come.

DAVID USHER AND THE LISTENING PART 1

On Friday night we facilitated part #1 of David Usher’s project The Listening.

Members of the RAYGUN community contributed their song of choice and together we shared. It was a beautiful way to get to know each other and he turned the space into an intimate den situation where music, stories and dancing became the art.

Due to the lengthy play list and by popular demand, we will continue the second part of the project on Tuesday night with more playing and David Usher magic. Come join us if you wish xx
